Discover the Alpine Loop

The Alpine Loop provides a true off-the-grid experience. Before you set out, make sure to inform someone of your plans and come prepared with all necessary supplies, including water, food, and fuel. Keep in mind that electronic devices often won’t work in most areas of the Alpine Loop, so it’s best to download maps or have printed versions on hand before you embark on your journey. This rugged 4×4 trail weaves through the breathtaking San Juan Mountains, linking Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray. As you navigate passes reaching up to 12,800 feet, you’ll encounter remnants of old mines, ghost towns, natural marvels, vibrant wildflowers, and an array of wildlife. The Alpine Loop offers not just a journey through nature, but also a dive into the rich history of the area, all while surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes. Completing the loop can take an entire day, but with various designated side routes, you can opt for a shorter trip or extend your adventure over several days. For additional details, reach out to the Gunnison Field Office.
