The Lonetree Wildlife Management Area in central North Dakota comprises 33,000 acres of wildlife habitat owned by the Bureau of Reclamation and managed by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. There is a 32 miles segment of the North Country Trail that passes through Lonetree. It is designed for hiking but any non-motorized travel including mountain bikes or horseback riding is allowed. The Trail is not mowed but is marked with yellow carsonite posts. An amazing amount of wildlife can be viewed here: whitetail deer, moose, sharptail grouse, ring-necked pheasant, gray partridge, canada geese, snow geese, mallards, gadwall, pintail, Blue and green wing teal, scaup, canvasback, redhead, buffalo head, borrows golden eye, ruddy duck, northern shovler, sandhill crances, whooping cranes, coyote, fox, racoon, badger, skunk, squirrels, mink, weasels, raptors including Redtail, Marsh, Swainson’s Hawks, and shorebirds including Piping Plover, American Avocet, Willet, Spotted Sandpiper, Wilson’s Phalarope, Yellow Rails and migrant passerines like LeConte’s and Nelson’s sharptailed sparrows, Baird’s and Grasshopper sparrows, Chestnut-collared Longspur, and Marbled Godwit abound.
